Security & privacy

How we protect your data — precisely.

Your messages, files and children’s health and contact details are encrypted in transit and at rest, with a separate encryption key for each family. GrownUps is not end-to-end encrypted, because the server has to be able to produce your export and your reports — so we say what is true instead: the encryption keys are held per family, our admin console is architecturally unable to read your content, and a test proves it on every build. We don’t sell data or run ads, and the app uses no third-party analytics.

GrownUps is in development. Leave your email and we’ll tell you the day it’s ready — that’s the only email you’ll get.

In detail

How it works.

What “encrypted” means here, exactly.

Everything travels over TLS. The database and file storage are encrypted at rest. On top of that, the things that matter most — message bodies, your documents, and your children’s health and contact details — are encrypted with a key belonging to your family alone, which is itself protected by a managed key service. A leaked database copy would contain ciphertext.

Why we are not end-to-end encrypted, and why we say so.

End-to-end encryption would mean the server could never read your content — which would also mean it could never produce your exportable record, your integrity check, or your formatted report. Those are the reasons the product exists. So we made a different trade-off and we describe it accurately rather than borrowing a phrase that would sound better and be untrue.

The admin boundary is architecture, not policy.

Our own admin tools cannot return message bodies, document contents, child details, calendar contents or expense line items. This is not a permission setting that someone could change: the admin code lives in a separate part of the system that is structurally unable to reference that data, and an automated test fails the build if that ever stops being true.

One family cannot see another.

Every record is filtered by family identity at the lowest level, and there is an automated test for every single endpoint that proves a member of one family is denied access to another’s data. Those tests run on every build, permanently.

Your rights, working.

Export everything, free, at any time. Delete your account for real — your personal data erased or anonymised, completed within 30 days including your stored files. Where a shared record has to be retained because your co-parent co-owns it, you appear as “Former co-parent”, and we tell you that before you confirm, not afterwards.

What we don’t do.

No ads. No selling or sharing your data. No third-party analytics library in the app. On this website, analytics cookies load only with your consent. No continuous location. No covert recording — if a recorded-call feature ever ships, both parents are notified, always.

Questions

Good to know.

Is GrownUps end-to-end encrypted?

No — and we say so. Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest with a per-family key, but the server has to produce your exports and reports, so it isn’t end-to-end. We describe the trade-off accurately rather than borrow a phrase.

Can your staff read my messages or documents?

No. Our admin console is architecturally unable to return your content, and an automated test fails the build if that ever changes.

Do you sell data or run ads?

No — no ads, and we never sell or share your data. The app itself carries no third-party analytics; on this website we use analytics only to see what’s helpful — Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity load only if you accept the cookie banner, plus cookieless Ahrefs — never to advertise to you or build a profile of you.

Free, and private by design

Free for both parents. Yours to export, always.

No per-parent fee, no paywall on your own record, and encrypted so our staff can’t read your content.
